Ljubljana Polje, a green, peaceful and diverse eastern quarter
Polje is the eastern city quarter of Ljubljana, which combines several former villages and today's suburban neighborhoods. It is an area that retains a pleasant, almost rural character, while offering good connections to the city. The quarter includes Polje, Novo Polje, Vevče, Slape, Spodnji and Zgornji Kašelj, Zalog, Brinje, Spodnji and Zgornji Zadobrovo and Podgorje.
All of these settlements are located in the eastern part of Ljubljana's plain, which gives the area a lot of openness, greenery and space.
Living environment and character of the quarter
Polje is a distinctly residential and family-friendly area, where older village centers, newer neighborhoods and quiet streets intertwine. Another special feature of the quarter is that it includes Podgrad, the only independent settlement in the quarter, which lies on the hilly part east of the Ljubljanica.
The district is relatively large – it measures 22.1 km² and has 20,394 inhabitants (2020).
Nature, recreation and special features of the area
Polje is ideal for anyone who appreciates nature and peace. The district is home to:
Zajčja Dobrava Landscape Park, a popular excursion spot
V produ wetland near Rdečem Blato, along two backwaters of the Ljubljanica
These natural corners offer excellent opportunities for walking, running, cycling and observing nature.
Services and everyday life
Polje is a diverse and dispersed area, so services are located in individual neighborhoods – from shops and schools to local clubs and sports areas. Due to the proximity of Zalog and Kašlje, residents have access to many basic services, while at the same time it is still relatively close to the city center.
Transport connections
Polje borders several Ljubljana districts:
This location provides good transport connections to both the center of Ljubljana and the eastern and northern exits from the city.
History and identity
Polje has a rich historical background. The place was first mentioned in written sources in 1499 as ecclesiam beate Virginis Marie in Campo.
Until 1952, it was officially called Devica Marija v Polje, but the name was changed as part of post-war secularization.
The historic core with the Church of the Virgin Mary of the Assumption remains an important part of the local identity.
Why is Polje a pleasant place to live?
Polje is an excellent choice for anyone who wants a peaceful, green and pleasant stay on the eastern edge of Ljubljana, with just the right amount of city proximity.
