Umag is the Istrian coastal castle and the westernmost castle in Croatia. It has 6,750 inhabitants (2021) and is the seat of the municipality of the same name, which has about 12,700 inhabitants. Administratively, it belongs to the County of Istria.
Location and geographical features
Umag is the westernmost municipality in Croatia, stretching from the Savudrija peninsula / Piran Bay to Lovrečica in the south. The castle is located on the northwestern coast of Istria, only 10 km from the border with Slovenia.
The castle is divided into two parts:
- the old town center on the peninsula
- the newer part with the main areas of Komunela, Punta and Moela

Since 1991, Umag has been an official Croatian castle.

Umag has a typical medieval urban appearance with narrow streets and squares. A part of the city walls from the 10th century and a defensive tower from the 14th century have been preserved.
