Izola  a pleasant seaside town with a Mediterranean vibe

Izola is a seaside town in Slovenian Istria with just over 11,000 inhabitants. It lies on the southern coast of the Bay of Koper, between Piran and Koper. The town has a distinct Mediterranean character, a rich history and a pleasant, homely atmosphere.

Living environment and character of the town

Izola was founded on a former island, which was connected to the mainland in the 18th century. The old town centre stands on a limestone peninsula and preserves its medieval design, narrow streets and port vibe.

Today's Izola stretches:

  • from the industrial area of ​​Viližan (Polje) in the northeast,
  • through the residential neighbourhoods of Livade and Pregavor,

Izola has a rich history:

  • it was already settled in the Roman era (Haliaetum),
  • first mentioned in 972,
  • for centuries it was under the Venetian Republic (1280–1797),
  • later under the Austrian Littoral,
  • after World War II part of Zone B of the Free Territory of Trieste,
  • since 1991 a Slovenian Istrian town.

The town is home to numerous cultural institutions, including the Izola Museum – House of the Sea, the Parenzana Museum, several galleries and the Simonov zaliv Archaeological Park.
