Ljubljana Trnovo: a historical, cultural and pleasantly green district on the Ljubljanica River

Trnovo is one of the most recognizable districts of Ljubljana. It is located southwest of Ljubljana Castle, on the left bank of the Ljubljanica River. It is an area that combines rich history, cultural vitality, pleasant green spaces and good transport connections.

The district covers an area of 718 ha and has a population of 16,777 (2020).

Residential environment and character of the district

  • Trnovo is a diverse and pleasant residential area that includes:
  • The Trnovo suburb, once known for its low-rise buildings and houses with large gardens that supplied the Ljubljana market
  • The Trnovo blocks (VS-1) from the 1980s, designed by architect Aleksandar Peršin
  • Traditional areas such as Krakovo, Kolezija, Gmajna, Sibirija, Mestni log and Rakova jelša

This diversity gives Trnovo a special, homely and at the same time urban character.

Nature and recreation

Trnovo is closely connected to water and greenery:

  • Walking paths stretch along the Ljubljanica River,
  • the Gradaščica River runs through the quarter, crossed by a famous tree-lined bridge - one of the few of its kind in Europe
  • and further south runs the Mali Graben River, artificially excavated for flood safety.

The proximity of the river, tree-lined avenues and quiet streets makes Trnovo very pleasant for walks, cycling and relaxation.

Culture, history and identity

Trnovo is extremely rich in cultural and historical heritage:

  • Jože Plečnik, one of the most important Slovenian architects, lived here; his house now houses the permanent collection of the Ljubljana Museum of Architecture
  • in the Trnovo church, France Prešeren first met Julia Primic, his muse, to whom he dedicated the Sonnet Wreath
  • near the church stands the KUD France Prešeren, known for its alternative scene and the Trnfest festival, which takes place every summer and is recognizable throughout Europe
  • the writer Fran Saleški Finžgar, a long-time parish priest of Trnovo, also worked in the quarter

Trnovo is thus one of the most important cultural areas of Ljubljana.
